Many people, in their search for good beer, have turned to homebrewing. It’s easy to make a beer that is better than commercial brews in many parts of the world. Others homebrew simply because it is cheap. Today there are more than 600,000 home brewers across the country and the quality of ingredients and advice for homebrewers has improved. Today it is easier than ever to create your favorite brew right in your own home, home brewing kits have come a long way over the years and with little time and allot of patience you can enjoy your own fine hop creations.

Most kits come with everything you need from a Brew Keg Fermenter, hopped malt extracts (beer mix) and reusable plastic bottles, and the process takes about 2 weeks "that’s where the patience comes in". You can make just about any style beer that you find at the local distributor and many recipes are available online.

Beer Brewing Tips:

Try different things in your beer. Add some spices. I’ve read of people using syrups. There are no hard and fast rules. Some of the greatest beers I have tried broke the rules. Just because it sounds sick doesn’t mean it will be.

Always keep brew logs! Even if you are using a kit. I once made an excellent hefeweizen, but didn’t take any notes. A went back to the brew shop but didn’t know what yeast I used. With notes, if you make a mistake, you will know what to change.

Buy bulk hops as much as possible. You might not need a full pound of cascade or hallatauer hops, but quantity is always best. Buying hops online is usually cheaper, even with shipping. The night before you are going to bottle your beer, set all needed bottles on your kitchen counter top and fill each bottle with water and Star San solution. Let these bottles soak overnight.

Dry hopping can add floral character to the beer. The dry hop can be added in the secondary or in the keg. To add the dry hop, add about a quarter to one ounce of the hop in a grain bag and leave them in the beer for a week. This only adds a nice flower aroma to the beer and does not change the taste in any manner.

Distilled water should not be used as it lacks minerals and nutrients that are required for proper yeast fermentation. On the other hand city (chlorinated) water can ruin the taste of the beer completely. The best kind of water is well water or spring water.

Beer making is more fun than you might think. One of the more enjoyable aspects of home beer making is the ability to try different styles of beer. There are so many different styles and tastes that a person can make with their beer making kits, such as light beer, dark beer, bitter beer, sweet beer, etc. Most beer kit companies offer a variety of recipes. The kit I use has over 170 different recipes. This variety makes it easy to experiment with all the different kinds and tastes of beer that are out there. My brother, father-in-law, and I have each tried different recipes. We then got together to sample each others batch (any reason to get together to drink beer). It’s been so much fun, in fact, that we are now getting friends involved as well and their getting their own kits.

So what is in a brewing kit, what are the differences and what will it cost you?

Starters

The starter kit will get you all the the things you will need for that first batch of beer you are going to brew. You will get a keg which is made from polyvinyl chloride, this is food grade, shatter resistant and very light. Obviously there will also be a lid and assembly set for a tap. There will be some reusable bottle caps included with universal openings. Often people who brew their beer at home use PET soft drink bottles to bottle the beer in. These caps will fit those kind of bottles. There is always the option to buy new clean plastic bottles if you prefer. Last but certainly not least, you will get a so called "Brew Pack" this holds all the beer mix, sanitizer and yeast you need for you first two gallon batch of beer. And of course there will be an instruction manual included as well. All this will probably set you back about $40.

Premium

On top of what is included in the starter kit the premium variation holds the following items. Eight (one liter) bottles, labels and caps. These bottles can be reused. They choose the number eight because most home beer brewers prefer that number of bottles when there are two of you drinking the batch. The labels who are self adhesive give your bottles that authentic look. Also included in the premium pack is a brewers guide. You can always get a refill brew pack you could use once the first pack is used and bottled, always for two gallons. The brewer’s guide should not be mistaken for the starter kit instruction manual. The guide is a valuable reference that will help you in the years to come while you practice this wonderful hobbby. The premium beer kit will cost you around $50.

Professional

In the professional kit you will find everything that was in the premium one but this time you will get enough for brewing yourself three batches of beer which is about six gallons. On top of that there will be a brew-o-meter, hop scale, funnel, measuring spoon and sugar measure. With this kit you must be sure that you want to go through with this hobby, not because it would be a waste of money but it would be a waste of good beer. A professional set is for people who have seen someone else using a kit and now wants to do it on their own. A kit like this will probable be about $100.
